MURFREESBORO — Cocke County’s historic season came to a heartbreaking end Friday afternoon as the Lady Red fell to White County, 46-43, in the TSSAA Class 3A State Semifinals at Murphy Center.


In a tightly contested game that stayed close from start to finish, Cocke County had an opportunity to force overtime in the final seconds. A contested three-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the rim, ending the Lady Red’s run just one step short of the state championship game.


Despite the loss, Cocke County showed it belonged on the state stage, battling White County possession by possession in front of a packed and emotional crowd.


Junior forward Karmine Carmichael led the Lady Red with a huge performance, finishing with 23 points and 10 rebounds while making her presence felt on both ends of the floor. Carmichael helped keep Cocke County within striking distance all afternoon and delivered several big baskets in key moments.


The Lady Red found momentum in the third quarter when Carmichael scored inside to give Cocke County its first lead of the game. From there, the two teams traded baskets throughout the period, with neither side able to gain much breathing room.


White County eventually regained the advantage late in the third and carried a slim lead into the fourth quarter.


The Warriorettes pushed the margin to seven points with under three minutes remaining, but Cocke County refused to back down. The Lady Red answered with timely free throws and an aggressive drive from Brookelyn Clevenger that turned into a three-point play, cutting the deficit to two with just over two minutes to play.


From there, every possession mattered.


Carmichael scored again inside to bring Cocke County within one late in the fourth, and Ava Wheeler later made two clutch free throws to make it a two-point game in the closing seconds.


After White County split a pair at the line on the other end, the Lady Red had one final chance to force overtime. Wheeler got a contested look from beyond the arc at the buzzer, and the shot nearly dropped before rolling away.


Cocke County had multiple chances throughout the game to shift momentum for good but struggled to capitalize at the free throw line in key spots. In a game where every point was magnified, those missed opportunities proved costly.


There were also several whistles throughout the afternoon that left Cocke County’s bench, players, and supporters visibly frustrated. A number of calls did not go the Lady Red’s way, adding even more tension to an already physical and emotional semifinal battle. Even so, Cocke County continued to fight through it and gave itself a chance until the final horn.


White County was led by Gracie Clark, who finished with 16 points, while Ashlyn Selby added 13.


For Cocke County, the loss closes the book on another successful  season in program history. The Lady Red finish the year 34-5, marking their third straight appearance in the state tournament and another deep postseason run for the program.


Looking Ahead


While the ending was painful, the future remains bright for Cocke County. The Lady Red will graduate Blake Clevenger and Brookelyn Clevenger, two major contributors whose leadership, experience, and impact were felt throughout the season and during the team’s run to the state semifinals.


Replacing players of that caliber will not be easy, but Cocke County still returns a talented core with valuable big-game experience. With Karmine Carmichael continuing to lead the way and other young players expected to step into larger roles, the foundation remains in place for another strong run next season.


One shot separated the Lady Red from a trip to the state championship game, but their season is one that will not soon be forgotten.
