KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee's defense made a strong first impression under new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.

This week, that unit gets one of its leaders back.

Senior linebacker and captain Arion Carter is set to return Saturday when Tennessee travels to Georgia Tech after missing the season opener while serving an NCAA suspension.

Carter's return comes after a Tennessee defense controlled Furman for most of Saturday's 56-9 victory.

The Volunteers held the Paladins to 220 total yards, including just 43 through the air, while recording 13 tackles for loss and seven sacks.

Xavier Gilliam was one of the biggest reasons for that performance. The junior defensive lineman recorded five tackles for loss and three sacks, becoming Tennessee's first player with at least three sacks in a game since Darrell Taylor in 2018.

Now Carter rejoins the group for a considerably different matchup.

Georgia Tech quarterback Alberto Mendoza completed 17 of 23 passes for 237 yards in the Yellow Jackets' 14-13 season-opening loss to Colorado. Wide receiver Jordan Allen caught eight passes for 113 yards.

The Yellow Jackets struggled to establish their rushing attack, finishing with only 51 yards on the ground, but the personnel in the backfield has Tennessee's attention.

Justice Haynes, who previously played at Alabama, rushed for 64 yards against Colorado.

Head coach Josh Heupel described Georgia Tech this week as a physical football team and noted the experience across the Yellow Jackets' offensive line.

That presents another opportunity for Tennessee's new-look defense.

Knowles' first game in charge produced plenty of pressure and very little through the air. Georgia Tech should provide a better measurement of how quickly the system is developing.

Carter adds experience to the middle of it.

Heupel called Carter the strongest leader in Tennessee's locker room Monday and pointed to his development both as a player and leader during his time at UT.

Tennessee even sent Carter to midfield as its solo captain against Furman despite him being unavailable to play.

On Saturday night, he'll be able to join his teammates on the field.

For a defense facing its first road environment of 2026, his return comes at a useful time.
